Before setting up GAS, Sam Gledhill worked for high-end design practices and construction firms in London, including Soho House & Co as an Architect, and as a Design Manager for both a tier 1 contractor and an international modular construction company.

This unique blend of experience helps support clients through the often daunting transition from design-to-build and throughout the works until completion.

: This Brighton home needed a rethink. Phases of renovation over the years had left this home disjointed and out-of-sorts. There was an external stair that led to a second back door and utility space. We are looking to bring the stair inside and make the most of the height change. In this concept option (1 of 2) we are looking to create a single-pitched roof to work with the existing height change. The raised dining area can enjoy the view through the oversized Velux windows and at the kitchen level, the view of the garden can be enjoyed through the glazed doors.

This project is with the planners at the moment. Finger's crossed this one can be permitted asap.

: This Worthing mews home needs a rethink. Phases of renovation over the years left this home falling short in a number of ways. We are looking to reopen the courtyard and create two more self-contained double bedrooms in the rear annexe. The rear annexe works well for the client’s daughters who are hoping to have more independence.

This project is in the final stages of design coordination prior to tendering. Stay tuned for WIP images.

: This Hanover residence had a unique footprint. Most commonly the 'L' shaped Victorian terrace footprint is met with another 'L' to create a wraparound extension. This adds to the length and width of the living spaces. In this case the existing home had a wide streetside frontage and a pinched rear elevation. We used every inch we could to create internal spaces that worked with the pinch-points. The acute angles of the existing home made for a unique 'tapered' gally kitchen and a stark & angular skylight.

: This is the second project where we are looking to rethink a large ex-council residence in a highly valued parts of Hackney. It is also the third project we've worked on for this client.

This project is designed to attract medical professionals to flat-share. We created generous living and storage spaces to support the future occupants. This project may be offline following the discovery of certain development restrictions on the estate. Hopefully we can start-up the design process again soon.

: We have done various improvements on this Worthing Beach townhouse. This time we converted the mews space into a family annexe that can also act as a lettable self-contained unit during the busy summer period. We worked with the unique space and created key divides to efficiently split the space. The mews door was replaced with a feature timber window. As the home is within the 'Hinterland' conservation area, this modification amongst others required a full planning application and 1:5 scale detail drawings of the new windows/doors.

It seems to be the trend now for Airbnb designs to require/incorporate a desk space. So this conversation is no exception.

We're looking forward to sharing images for the other improvements we've done for this home.

: There are so many weird and wonderful Victorian homes in Hove. In this case the existing home's frontage would be in-keeping with any grand Victorian neighbourhood across the country. However, the rear of this home and others on the terrace, would be more in keeping with Balearic Island villas!

We are proposing that we remove some less tasteful glassy modifications from he 70s/80s and reinstate the rounded and more interesting parapets. We've used an appropriate scale for the proposed side extension in order to match the scale of the existing living spaces without overcrowding this space or overshadowing the neighbours garden.

: This wonderful Hove maisonette is in need of some love. We are looking to highlight/improve & make-sense-of the unique period features, scale & geometry. In this concept for the kitchen, we use the unique plaster archway to introduce a feature kitchen-run. We hope to make this really spectacular by using antique mirror and some very vibrant materials. The space is scaled-up in most ways to match the grandeur of Hove mansion buildings in the area. For this reason, there's space to create a 'blank-canvas' kitchen island (no sink, no burners) to be used for everything! In this instance we are creating a grand utility counter with appliances below and a space for folding/organising/ironing laundry.

: This wonderful home has been through a tough few years. Fortunately, this home is now getting the thought and consideration it deserves. We are looking to make a number of changes to renovate, extend and refurbish this home. In this option we are replicating some existing curvy leadwork from the front of the home and utilising this unique geometry to create a sheltered rear opening (to appreciate the sound of rain in the summer!) and also a rear studio extension with a garden storage space below.

Particularly when working within conservation areas, we compile the most interesting existing features and reimagine them in a manner to appease planners and maintain architectural merit and interest.

Lastly, the change of levels presented a unique challenge as there are a number of existing and degraded retaining walls. We looked to maintain these walls where possible/logical, in order to prioritise spending where the client would appreciated it most in the future.
